Superheroes land in north Phoenix on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when Mexico-based restaurant, bar and store ComicX opens at Desert Ridge Marketplace.
The restaurant features all things comic, with more than 25 life-sized statues and figures of comic book heroes and villains, memorabilia from favorite movies, and collectibles available for sale to take home as souvenirs.
Diners can grab a drink with R2-D2 at the bar or chow down in the dining room as the Silver Surfer soars over head at the first location of ComicX to open in the United States.
The north Phoenix restaurant is scheduled to open to the public Wednesday, Dec. 4. A grand opening celebration is planned for early 2020.
What is ComicX?
ComicX, pronounced “comics,” was created in Hermosillo, Mexico in 2010. Since then, the comic-themed bar, restaurant and store has expanded to 36 locations around Mexico. The Desert Ridge Marketplace location is the first location in the U.S.
“It was just a natural location for us,” says Martha Huerta, chief of operations for ComicX. “We were built in Hermosillo, just down from the border, so Phoenix was the closest to home.”
For all the comic fans who may be wondering, ComicX does not subscribe to either the Marvel or DC Comics universes, but rather includes characters from both along with Disney and DreamWorks favorites. So Batman and Wonder Woman will have to play nice with Thor and Kung Fu Panda at the new restaurant.
The new location of ComicX occupies an 8,000-foot space between Sweet Tomatoes and Majerle’s Sports Bar at 21001 N. Tatum Blvd.
Along with food and unique atmosphere, ComicX also has activities for customers to get in on the action. Diners can play games at Xbox video game stations inside the restaurant.
Burgers, pizza and cocktails on the menu
While it may sounds more like a theme park or museum, ComicX is a full service restaurant. The menu features a section of “South of the Border” items including shrimp tacos and steak fajitas, but focuses mostly on American pub fare. Guests can try ribs, a selection of pastas, burgers and pizza.
To keep the allure of the comic book universe going strong, many of the menu items come with names to match the theme.
Customers can start the meal with an appetizer of Wonder Wings and then enjoy a Supersonic Cheeseburger. For dessert, choose between The Incredible Churro Bowl and glass of Harry’s Butter Beer.
And while pizza and burgers may be the focus of the food menu, their typical pairing is not the highlight of the drinks. The bar offers just three beers on draft and big name brands in bottles.
For the most creative options, try a cocktail at ComicX. The Pop Rock Raccoon comes in a glass rimmed with tropical punch pop rocks and the Banana Cream Pie Martini is sure to leave a lasting impression.
