Only one restaurant from Arizona made a prestigious list of the top 1,000 culinary destinations in the world. And that honor goes to a place just outside Phoenix.
La Liste, an annual restaurant ranking from France, named Kai one of the best restaurants in the world. The selection team, comprising food critics and “expert guides,” used a scoring system to determine the top picks.
Kai, which means “seed” in the Pima language, was one of only 113 restaurants from the United States to make the cut, according to a press release.
What is Kai restaurant?
The Forbes five-star restaurant is located in the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass, where it’s known for upscale interpretations of Native American food.

The menu is influenced by the Pima and Maricopa tribes and features locally farmed ingredients from the Gila River Indian Community.
For the ranking, restaurants are scored based on a combination of reviews from guidebooks and publications as well as online customer reviews. Thousands of chefs are asked to grade the guidebooks on a score from 0 to 10, with 10 meaning “very trustworthy,” which influences how much the guidebook review is worth, according to the La Liste website.
