A Minnesota man who told deputies in Mohave County that his girlfriend overdosed on drugs Wednesday has since been arrested on suspicion of her murder, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Deputies responded to a welfare check about 6 p.m., near Boundary Cone Road and Highway 95 in Fort Mohave after an out-of-state caller reported that her friend overdosed on illegal drugs and could be located in a vehicle on the side of the road, officials said in a press release.
She told deputies that her friend’s boyfriend called her to tell her about the overdose, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies found 40-year-old Amy J. Berg unresponsive, according to the press release. The woman, who was from Rochester, Minnesota, could not be revived and was declared dead, officials said.
Berg’s boyfriend, Daniel J. Campbell, 55, also of Rochester, told deputies they were driving across the country but stayed at a hotel in Kingman the night before, the Sheriff’s Office said. He told deputies Berg bought illegal drugs from an unknown person.
Campbell also told deputies Berg was not feeling well while driving Wednesday and the couple stopped near Boundary Cone Road and Highway 95, officials said. He said Berg began overdosing and that he attempted CPR.
The Sheriff’s Office said there were no obvious signs of foul play inside the vehicle or to Berg’s body so Campbell was released from the scene.
However, the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded Berg’s autopsy Thursday, which revealed blunt force trauma to her skull and signs of strangulation to her neck, according to the press release. Berg’s death was ruled a homicide.
The Sheriff’s Office said it immediately issued an attempt-to-locate alert for Campbell and found him about 3 p.m. Thursday at a Bullhead City hotel near the 1600 block of Highway 95. He was arrested without incident, the agency said.
Campbell faces a second-degree murder charge, according to the press release.
The investigation is ongoing.
